I came back from Brazil earlier than planned. I got really sick and couldn’t figure out what it was. Since I didn’t buy health insurance for this trip I decided to cut it short and come home early. After various exams the doctor has concluded that I may be lactose or gluten intolerant.

I was happy that I didn’t have something more serious, but a bit surprised that it wasn’t because of all the pain this has caused. I was sad to have to leave Brazil early but content with my decision.

Today I decided to get back on track with my active routine to help me de-stress. I took Valentina out on a bike ride. It’s amazing how much more receptive she was to wearing her helmet than a few months ago. She is beginning to understand natural and logical consequences. I am a proud momma!

Our baby date with Aiko was fashionably fun. However, Valentina was being a bit mean. Quite mean. I am not sure where this came from. Our baby outings were going great and she was not hitting like she was when I first introduced her to other little humans. Either way we had lots of fun, ate snacks, and shared toys. And the mommies got in some quality chats.

After 15 wonderful months of breastfeeding I finally decided to wean. It was a very emotional ride. At least seven long nights of tears and no sleep. However, Valentina still has hope that mommy will change her mind. Once or twice a day I get a breastfeeding request. She will cautiously approach me for some hugs then tries to make her way down my shirt. I feel sad after repeatedly denying her, like I’m infringing on her rights to milk but I try to convince myself that this was the right time.

My decision to wean was somewhat abrupt. I had been trying to wean for a few months. I had gradually cut out most of her feedings during the day. We were feeding once in the morning and once in the evening. She ate food all throughout the day while I was at work. At night breastfeeding was starting to become a hobby. Many sleepless nights and sore nipples finally pushed me over the edge. Breastfeeding was happening mostly for Valentina’s comfort and not so much as a need. So over a four day break from work I chose to finally do IT. The scariest and most heartbreaking moment in breastfeeding was finally here. On Wednesday night before thanksgiving I stopped breastfeeding her and offered her breastmilk in a bottle. Man, was this a difficult battle. Weaning was way harder than I expected. We went through 30 continuous minutes of crying, getting physically assaulted by a toddler which included hair pulling and even some biting, then some quiet moments followed by screaming. This cycle happened over and over again throughout the night for many nights. It was hard. Really hard.

She has now gone 10 days without breastmilk. But still seems interested in my breasts. She seems satisfied, however, with drinking cows milk. This is quite an accomplishment since she had not wanted to even taste cow’s milk before.

With this summary of weaning my toddler I conclude this wonderful chapter in my life. I will cherish every moment I had breastfeeding my lovely daughter. Every second of it was sweet and worthwhile.
